Asparagus Season with Fifer Orchards

Here at From the Farmer, eating seasonally is something we value and encourage in everything we do—It’s a way to support local farms who use sustainable practices, nourish our bodies with food that hasn’t travelled far or been tainted with preservatives + processing, reduce our environmental carbon footprint, and of course, enjoy delicious produce at peak freshness, flavor, and nutritional content!

With spring finally in full swing, there are a lot of fresh + delightful fruits and veggies to enjoy— but there is one hearty + delicious green stalk on our mind these days that we can’t seem to ever get enough of…

That’s right, FTF Tribe, the long-awaited asparagus season is finally here!

What’s the Asparagus buzz all about?

Asparagus is jam-packed with antioxidants, fibre, protein, and each stalk adds a slew of health benefits to your meal: including improving heart health, fighting and preventing cancer, regulating blood sugar, anti-aging benefits, anti-inflammatory properties, and more. These versatile stalks are great on the grill, added to your favorite roast, stirred in soups, sprinkled in pastas, sautéed with garlic and parmesan, steamed with a little olive oil and s+p, and more! 

Fifer Orchards: Kings of Asparagus

Our dear friends at Fifer Orchards love asparagus as much as we do, and have an incredible crop to share with the From the Farmer Tribe this season! Fifer Orchards is a 4th generation farm in Kent County, Delaware that has been practicing sustainable farming since their beginnings in 1919. We love supporting farmers like the Fifer family because they share the core values that are the foundation of our mission (and, well, because their asparagus is awesome!)

The best ways to bring spring to your table… with Asparagus!

As the award-winning chef Dan Barber proved in his restaurant at Blue Hill in New York, asparagus can be worked into any dish… even ice cream!

But for those of you who aren’t so keen about this savory green in your creamy desserts, here are 3 of our favorite ways to incorporate Asparagus into your meals and bring on a fresh dose of spring:

1. Toss it on the grill

These flavor-packed stalks don’t need much– Just toss in olive oil, salt, and pepper, and throw it on the grill with rosemary and thinly-sliced lemons. Once your asparagus has a subtle char, it’s ready to be topped on your fresh-grilled salmon, Hoffman’s NY strip steak, or plant-based protein!

2. Wrap it in bacon

Need we say more? Asparagus and bacon make an addictive duo (doesn’t bacon and everything makes an addictive duo?), and in this recipe, that’s all you need! Wrap your asparagus in thick-cut bacon, add pepper to taste, and set in the oven at 400° for 26-32 minutes. Great as an appetizer, party offering, or if you’re like us, as an afternoon snack!

3. All you need is steam!

 That’s right– steamed asparagus is a simple, easy way to prepare asparagus for any meal! Steam the asparagus for 5-10 minutes or until tender, and then chop and add to your fresh garlic + parm pasta dish, stuff in sustainably sourced chicken breast or in fresh portobello mushrooms, drizzle with pesto, pair with your homemade meatloaf, or eat on it’s own as a springy side dish! The possibilities are asparagus! (…Oops, we mean endless!)
