Farmers come in all shapes and sizes—big or small, we love them all! From urban micro-enterprises to large-scale family farms, at From the Farmer our independent, local producers are as varied as the fruits and veggies they grow.

The common connection is passion: we love to work with people who love what they do and take real pride in their work. This week, we wanted to introduce you to a few of our farmers—these hard-workin’ humans are the faces behind the amazing, local produce that we deliver to your door.

Little Wild Things

Tiny but mighty, our friends at Little Wild Things carved out an itty-bitty farm space right in the center of D.C. Their incredible selection of microgreens, salad greens, and edible flowers are all grown on less than one­-quarter acre of city land. With a commitment to sustainability and a passion for urban agriculture, Little Wild Things uses organic and sustainable growing practices to deliver superior products with minimal eco-impact.

 

Chocolate and Tomatoes

Chocolates and Tomatoes Farm is the passion project of first-generation farmer Mark Mills. Mark is a pastry chef and veteran of the restaurant industry who traded it all in for a plot of certified organic land. Through a partnership with the Montgomery County Farmer Pilot Project, Mark grows over 150 different veggies on just three acres of farmland in Poolesville, MD. Even better—Mark puts his pastry training to good use by hand-crafting specialty chocolates, drawing on his crops to create unique flavor combos.

Spring Valley Farm and Orchard

Spring Valley Farm is an exceptional, innovative family farm just outside of Romney, West Virginia. Farmers Eli and Misty grow a huge variety of fruits and veggies on 345 acres of orchards, farmland, and heated greenhouses. Using solar heat during the winter months, Spring Valley provides us with root veggies during the winter months when most farms are dormant. Eli and Misty use integrated pest management and sustainable growing practices to ensure that they are good stewards to their land.
